Kinnaur Road Status (NH-5)
Real-time NH-5 conditions, Nigulsari landslide updates, HPPWD clearing operations, and critical safety guidelines for your Kinnaur & Spiti trip.
🚨 Live Highway Status Bulletin
Last Updated: October 2026- NH-5 (Shimla to Reckong Peo): OPEN (Caution required at Nigulsari due to intermittent rockfall).
- Sangla-Chitkul Link Road: PARTIALLY OPEN (Heavy frost in morning, drive only after 10:00 AM).
- Reckong Peo to Kaza (via Nako): OPEN (Watch for shooting stones at Malling Nallah).
- Current Weather Impact: High altitude areas (Chitkul, Nako) are experiencing early snowfall. The roads are slippery. 4x4 vehicles highly recommended for Chitkul.
Driving on NH-5: The Half-Tunnel Highway
National Highway 5 (NH-5), specifically the stretch passing through the Kinnaur district, is frequently dubbed as one of the "World's Deadliest Roads." This isn't just an exaggeration for tourists. The road is carved directly into massive, vertical rock faces overhanging the violently rushing Sutlej River.
Whether you are checking this page months before your trip to understand the terrain, or you are sitting in a hotel room in Shimla right now deciding if it's safe to proceed to Kalpa, this page is designed to give you hyper-detailed, life-saving information.
The 4 Critical Landslide & Rockfall Zones
Kinnaur's mountains are geologically "young" and fragile. A slight drizzle, high winds, or temperature drops can trigger rockfalls. Here are the exact points you must watch out for:
1. The Nigulsari Slide (Near Bhawanagar)
Threat Level: Extreme. This is the most active landslide zone in Kinnaur. Even without rain, dry "shooting stones" (small rocks falling at bullet speed) occur frequently.
Action: Never stop your car to take photos here. Turn off your music, roll down your windows slightly so you can hear rocks falling, and drive through swiftly.
2. Taranda Dhank (The Cliff Hanger)
Threat Level: High. Famous for its dramatic "half-tunnel" rock overhangs. The road here is extremely narrow.
Action: Watch the convex mirrors carefully. Heavy HRTC buses coming from the opposite side need the entire road width. Reverse your car if you spot a bus entering the tunnel segment.
3. Urni Dhank (Near Karcham)
Threat Level: Medium to High. Prone to massive road sinkages. The HPPWD frequently has to rebuild the retaining walls here.
Action: Expect sudden, unannounced road closures here for 2-3 hours while earthmovers work.
4. Malling Nallah (Between Nako and Tabo)
Threat Level: Extreme. A notorious water crossing that frequently brings down massive boulders and mud.
Action: In October, the water freezes overnight. Cross this only after the sun has melted the ice (post 10 AM), otherwise, bikes will skid off the cliff.
Active Operations by HPPWD & BRO
The Himachal Pradesh Public Works Department (HPPWD) and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) maintain these lifelines. If you are stuck in traffic, it is likely because:
- Controlled Blasting: To widen roads, BRO periodically conducts controlled dynamite blasting. Traffic is usually halted between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM for this.
- Snow Clearance: As we move deeper into late October and November, snow clearance machines are deployed near Chitkul and Nako. Do not try to overtake a snowplow.
- Bailey Bridge Maintenance: Kinnaur relies heavily on temporary iron Bailey bridges over the Sutlej. Only one heavy vehicle is allowed to cross at a time. Follow the instructions of the guard strictly.
Golden Rules for Driving in Kinnaur
- The Rule of the Mountain: The vehicle driving UPHILL always has the right of way. If you are coming downhill and meet a truck, you must reverse and give them space.
- No Driving After Dark: Do not drive in Kinnaur after 6:00 PM. Black ice forms on the roads, shooting stones become invisible, and a single mistake is fatal.
- Beware of Black Ice (October/November): In shaded corners where the sun doesn't reach, moisture freezes into thin, invisible layers of "black ice." Braking on black ice will cause your car to spin out of control. Drive in low gear and avoid sudden brakes.
- Follow the Local Taxis: If a local driver stops his taxi and waits before a landslide zone, DO NOT overtake him. He has spotted shooting stones that you haven't. Follow their lead.
