The Adventure Capital of India
While many tourists visit Manali to relax in luxury resorts and visit ancient temples, the true heartbeat of the Kullu Valley is its extreme adventure sports. The dramatic geography of the region—featuring towering 5,000-meter peaks, massive glaciers, and furious river systems—makes it the absolute epicenter of outdoor activities in India.
Whether you want to leap off a mountain and glide through the clouds like a bird, or crash through Grade-III rapids on a rubber raft, this definitive 2026 guide breaks down everything you need to know about adventure activities in Kullu Manali. We cover the best locations, seasonal timings, safety protocols, and pricing details.
Paragliding in Solang Valley
Paragliding is undoubtedly the most sought-after adventure activity in Manali. The feeling of running off a cliff and soaring thousands of feet above the dense pine forests and the winding Beas River is unparalleled.
Types of Flights
1. Short Fly: Ideal for beginners, this flight lasts for about 1 to 2 minutes. You launch from a lower hill (about 100-200 meters high) and land in the main Solang Valley ground. It is perfect if you are slightly fearful of heights but still want the experience.
2. High Fly (Tandem): This is the ultimate experience. You take a cable car (ropeway) or a 4x4 vehicle up to Mount Phatru at an elevation of over 3,200 meters. The flight lasts anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes, offering a massive adrenaline rush and panoramic views of the Pir Panjal range. You fly tandem, meaning a highly trained pilot handles all the navigation; you just sit back in the harness and enjoy the view.
Safety & Best Time
Paragliding happens year-round, except during heavy monsoons (July-August) and days with extremely high wind speeds. Always ensure the pilot shows you their government-approved license. For the clearest views, September to November and March to May are the best months.
White Water River Rafting in Kullu
The Beas River, originating from the Rohtang Pass, flows violently down the Kullu Valley, creating world-class rapids that are perfect for white-water rafting. Unlike the calmer waters in lower altitudes, the Beas river offers a freezing, thrilling ride.
The Pirdi to Bajaura Stretch
The most famous rafting stretch begins at Pirdi (just a few kilometers ahead of Kullu town) and ends at Bajaura. This 14-kilometer stretch takes about 1.5 hours to navigate and features Grade II and Grade III rapids. It is challenging enough to get your heart pounding but safe enough for families and beginners. You will be provided with a life jacket, a helmet, and a professional raft guide who sits at the back to steer the inflatable boat.
When to go Rafting?
Rafting is officially closed during the monsoon season (mid-July to mid-September) as the river swells dangerously and the currents become lethal. The best time to experience rafting is right after the monsoon (October-November) when the water is crystal clear and the rapids are powerful, or in early summer (April-June) as the glacial melt increases the water volume.
Skiing and Snowboarding (Winter Specials)
When the heavy winter snows arrive in late December, Manali transforms from a green valley into a white winter wonderland. It becomes the premier destination in India for snow sports.
Solang Valley
During peak winter (January and February), Solang Valley hosts various national skiing championships. You can rent ski equipment (skis, boots, and poles) locally and hire an instructor for a few hours.
Snowboarding & Igloo Stays in Sethan
If you want a more offbeat snowboarding experience, head to Sethan Village. Located about 15 km from Manali, Sethan receives heavier snowfall than Solang. It is famous for its backcountry snowboarding trails and India's only Igloo stays. Sleeping in a real snow Igloo under the stars is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Snowmobiling (Snow Scooters)
Available primarily in Solang Valley and Rohtang Pass (when accessible), snow scooters offer a fast-paced thrill ride over snow-covered landscapes without needing any skiing skills. A trained driver takes you for a thrilling ride, or you can self-drive on designated flat tracks.
High Altitude Trekking & Camping
Manali is the absolute basecamp for some of the most spectacular Himalayan treks in the world. Whether you are a beginner looking for a day hike or a seasoned mountaineer attempting a 5,000-meter pass, Manali has a trail for you.
Beginner Treks
1. Bhrigu Lake Trek (4,300m): A spectacular 3-day trek that takes you to a sacred alpine lake. What makes this trek unique is that you reach high-altitude meadows (bugyals) on just the second day. The views of the Hanuman Tibba and Seven Sister peaks are incredible.
2. Beas Kund Trek (3,700m): This 3-day trek takes you to the literal source of the Beas River—a glacial lake surrounded by massive peaks. It is a relatively flat walk through the beautiful Solang Valley and Dhundi, making it perfect for first-timers.
Advanced Expeditions
For serious trekkers, Manali serves as the starting point for the grueling Hampta Pass Trek (connecting Kullu valley to Lahaul and Spiti) and the Pin Parvati Pass (a lethal, highly challenging 11-day expedition traversing a 5,300m glacier). These treks require professional guides, acclimatization, and serious physical fitness.
ATV Rides, Zorbing, and Ziplining
If extreme sports aren't your thing, there are plenty of fun, moderate activities available right in Solang Valley.
Zorbing: You are strapped inside a massive, transparent PVC ball and rolled down the grassy slopes of Solang. It is hilarious, dizzying, and completely safe.
ATV Dirt Biking: Rent a massive 4-wheel All-Terrain Vehicle and speed through designated dirt tracks and muddy riverbanks.
Ziplining: Experience the thrill of zipping across the Beas River on a heavy steel cable, suspended hundreds of feet in the air.
Rock Climbing & Rappelling
Aleo, Vashisht, and the surrounding areas in Manali have excellent natural rock faces suited for both beginners and advanced climbers. Specialized adventure camps offer gear (ropes, harnesses, helmets) and professional belayers. Rappelling down the steep cliffs gives a tremendous rush of adrenaline.
Downhill Mountain Biking (MTB)
Kullu Manali's rugged terrain provides some of the best Downhill Mountain Biking routes in India. Trails from Rohtang down to Manali, or through the dense pine forests of Naggar and Solang, offer steep descents and sharp hairpin bends perfectly suited for extreme MTB enthusiasts.
River Crossing & High-Altitude Camping
River crossing (or Tyrolean Traverse) across the freezing Beas River is a popular camp activity. Strapped to a safety rope, you pull yourself across the roaring waters. Pair this with high-altitude camping in regions like Sethan or Dhundi for the ultimate wilderness experience.
Bungee Jumping & Giant Swing
Located in specific adventure parks around Kothi, Dhamsu, and Bahang, the newly introduced Bungee Jumping and Giant Swings offer heart-stopping freefalls into the deep gorges of the Kullu Valley. It is operated strictly under international safety standards.
Kayaking (Beas River & Tirthan)
For those who want an alternative to rafting, Kayaking provides a more personal battle with the river. Training is usually provided on calmer waters before attempting the class II and III rapids of the Beas and Tirthan rivers.
Angling & Trout Fishing (Tirthan Valley & Haripur)
A peaceful yet highly engaging activity, Trout Fishing is famous in the crystal-clear waters of the Tirthan Valley and near Haripur. You need a permit from the local fisheries department, and most fishing is strictly "catch and release" to protect the Brown and Rainbow Trout populations.
Motorcycle Expeditions (Himalayan Off-roading)
Manali is the absolute mecca for Royal Enfield riders heading towards Ladakh or Spiti. However, even within the Kullu Valley, off-road trails through the dense forests of Jana Waterfall or the rugged terrains of the Parvati Valley offer world-class motorcycle expedition experiences.
Waterfall Rappelling / Canyoning (Jogini & Jana Falls)
Take rock climbing to the next level by rappelling straight down the cascading waters of Jogini Falls or Jana Falls. You'll wear waterproof gear and helmets, lowering yourself down the slippery rocks directly under the heavy flow of the waterfall.
Ice Skating & Natural Sledging (Winter Season)
During peak winter (January to February), several ponds and small lakes around Manali freeze completely solid, creating natural open-air ice-skating rinks. Natural sledging on wooden tubes is also extremely popular in Rohtang and Solang when the powder is fresh.
Tethered Hot Air Ballooning
For a family-friendly aerial adventure, tethered hot air balloon rides operate in the lower plains of Kullu and Bhuntar. Rising 100-200 feet in the air, the balloon offers stunning panoramic views of the entire valley while being securely anchored to the ground.
Snowshoeing (Winter Hampta & Sethan)
Snowshoeing allows you to walk atop deep, powdery winter snow without sinking. Specialized gear attaches to your boots, making it possible to trek into the deep winter wilderness of Sethan and the initial stages of the Hampta Pass, giving you access to completely untouched snowscapes.
