Shimla to Kaza via Kinnaur (Hindustan-Tibet Road Route Map)
There are two ways to enter the majestic Spiti Valley. The first is via Manali, crossing the Atal Tunnel and Kunzum Pass, which is only open during the summer. The second, and arguably the more spectacular and culturally immersive route, is the Hindustan-Tibet Highway (NH-5) via Shimla and Kinnaur.
This route is known as the "All-Weather Route" because it generally remains open 12 months a year. Taking this route means you gradually ascend from the foothills of Chandigarh, into the dense pine forests of Shimla and Narkanda, through the terrifying cliff-hanger roads of Kinnaur, and finally emerge into the high-altitude cold desert of Spiti (Kaza). The gradual ascent also drastically reduces the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Shimla-Kinnaur-Spiti Road Conditions & Landslide Updates 2026
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) works tirelessly to maintain NH-5, but the fragile geology of the Himalayas means conditions change constantly. Here is the realistic 2026 update:
- Chandigarh to Shimla: Excellent 4-lane Himalayan expressway. Very smooth driving.
- Shimla to Rampur & Powari (Kinnaur): The roads have been significantly widened. It is mostly smooth tarmac, but expect heavy truck traffic carrying apples (in August/September) and hydro-project machinery.
- Powari to Nako (The Danger Zone): This stretch includes the famous "cliff-hanger" roads of Kinnaur (near Akpa and Khab). The roads are literally carved into vertical rock faces. They are narrow, unpaved in patches, and prone to sudden shooting stones. Never drive this stretch at night.
- Nako to Kaza (Spiti Valley): Once you cross Malling Nala (a notorious landslide zone that has been mostly stabilized by BRO), you enter Spiti. The roads from Sumdo to Kaza are a mix of smooth new tarmac and bumpy, dusty dirt tracks. Ground clearance is highly beneficial here.
- Winter Warning: Between December and March, the road beyond Nako is highly susceptible to black ice. Only 4x4 vehicles with snow chains are recommended if you are traveling deep into Spiti during these months.
