Why Go Offbeat in Shimla?
Shimla town is bursting at the seams. During peak season (May-June and December-January), you can spend 2 hours just crossing the Dhalli tunnel. The real beauty of the Himalayas lies just 15 to 60 kilometers outside the main town. By traveling slightly further on the Hindustan-Tibet Road (NH-5), you enter a world of dense cedar forests, apple orchards, and absolute silence.
1. Mashobra: The President's Retreat
Located just 11 km from Shimla, Mashobra is famous for housing "The Retreat," one of the two official summer residences of the President of India (the other being in Hyderabad). If the President finds it peaceful enough, you certainly will.
- Top Attraction: Craignano Nature Park. An Italian-style villa turned into a sprawling forest park with towering oaks and pines. Entry fee is a nominal ₹10.
- The Vibe: Extremely quiet, misty, and perfect for bird watching or long walks.
- How to Reach (Local Transport): Go to the Lakkar Bazaar Bus Stand (not the main ISBT). Buses going towards Tatapani or Basantpur will drop you at Mashobra crossing. Fare: ~₹15-₹20. Time: 40 mins.
- Taxi Info: A dedicated cab from Shimla will charge around ₹800 - ₹1,000 for a one-way drop.
2. Naldehra: The Secret Golf Course
Drive 11 km further from Mashobra and you reach Naldehra (22 km from Shimla). Discovered by the British Viceroy Lord Curzon, he was so captivated by the landscape that he built a 9-hole golf course here at an altitude of 2,200 meters.
- Top Attraction: The Golf Course perimeter walk and pony rides. You can rent a horse for ₹400-₹500 to take you through the dense forest trails surrounding the course.
- The Vibe: Royal, manicured, and Swiss-like meadows.
- How to Reach (Local Transport): From Lakkar Bazaar, board any bus heading to Tatapani or Sunni. Ask the conductor for a Naldehra ticket. Fare: ~₹35. Time: 1 hour.
3. Fagu & Cheog: Kufri's Better Half
If you are going to Kufri, keep driving for another 15 minutes (6 km). The chaotic traffic will suddenly vanish, and you will enter Fagu. It is perched on a ridge at 2,500 meters, meaning you get a 360-degree view of both the northern and southern Himalayan valleys.
The Apple Route (Cheog)
Right next to Fagu is the village of Cheog. This area is completely covered in apple orchards. If you visit between July and August, the trees are laden with red apples. It is the perfect place to book a boutique wooden homestay for ₹3,000/night instead of overpaying for a concrete hotel in Shimla.
- How to Reach: Any bus from Lakkar Bazaar going to Theog or Rohru will drop you at Fagu. Fare: ₹40. Time: 1 hour 15 mins.
4. Narkanda: The Gateway to Apple Country
At a distance of 60 km from Shimla, Narkanda is a serious upgrade. Situated at 2,708 meters, it receives heavier snowfall than Shimla and is a recognized skiing destination by HPTDC in the winter. In the summer, it offers one of the best short treks in Himachal.
- Top Attraction: Hatu Peak (3,400 meters). You can trek (7 km one way) or hire a local 4x4 taxi to the top. The panoramic view of the snow-clad Pir Panjal range from Hatu Mata temple is jaw-dropping. The road to the peak is exceptionally narrow—do not drive your own sedan up there.
- Winter Skiing: Between Jan-Feb, HPTDC runs ski courses here. It is far less commercialized and cheaper than Gulmarg or Auli.
- How to Reach (Local Transport): Go to ISBT Tutikandi or Lakkar Bazaar. Catch any bus going towards Rampur or Kinnaur. Almost every bus stops at Narkanda. Fare: ₹100-₹120. Time: 2.5 hours.
5. Kotgarh: The Apple Bowl of India
Located 15 km downhill from Narkanda, Kotgarh is historically significant. In 1916, an American named Samuel Stokes (who later became Satyanand Stokes) planted the first American apple trees here, transforming the economy of Himachal Pradesh forever.
- Top Attraction: Stokes Farm, St. Mary's Church (built in 1872), and Tani Jubbar Lake.
- The Vibe: Agritourism. You come here to stay in traditional Himachali homes, eat home-cooked food, and pluck apples straight from the tree (in August).
- Navigation Warning: Public transport from Narkanda to Kotgarh is limited to specific local timings. It is highly advised to book a local taxi from the Narkanda taxi stand (approx ₹800) to reach Kotgarh.
6. Shoghi: The Calm Before Shimla
Shoghi is situated 13 km before Shimla on the main Chandigarh-Shimla highway (NH-5). Many smart travelers now book resorts in Shoghi instead of Shimla to avoid city traffic entirely.
- Top Attraction: Tara Devi Temple. Situated on a hilltop, this temple offers a stunning view of Shimla town on one side and the deep valleys of Solan on the other. You can also catch the Toy Train from the quaint Shoghi railway station.
- How to Reach: Any bus coming from Chandigarh/Kalka towards Shimla will drop you at Shoghi. Fare from Shimla ISBT: ₹20. Time: 30 mins.

However, to reach Mashobra, Naldehra, or Fagu, you must go to the Lakkar Bazaar Bus Stand, which is exclusively for local upper Shimla routes. Do not confuse the two!
