The Green Lungs of Shimla
While 99% of tourists heading east from Shimla go straight to the crowded slopes of Kufri, the smart 1% stop midway. Located just 8 kilometers from the main town (right before Dhalli), the Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary is a 1,000-hectare pristine forest of Himalayan Cedar (Deodar), Oak, and Pine.
Established in 1880 by the British to protect the main water supply of Shimla town, this sanctuary is one of the most strictly protected forest reserves in North India. Because motor vehicles are completely banned, the air is unimaginably pure, and the only sounds you hear are the crunch of tires on dirt trails and the calls of exotic birds.
Cycling the Sanctuary: A 14 km Forest Trail
The absolute best way to experience the sanctuary is on a mountain bike. The forest department maintains a beautifully flat, mostly level 7 km dirt road that cuts straight through the heart of the forest, leading to the Seog Water Reservoir.
The Riding Experience
- The Route: The trail starts at the main gate near Dhalli and ends at the Seog Reservoir (7 km one way). You must return on the same path, making it a 14 km round trip.
- Difficulty Level: Easy. Unlike most Himalayan trails that involve gruelling uphills, this path was built along a water pipeline contour. It is almost completely flat, making it ideal even for beginners and casual riders.
- Renting at the Gate: The forest department provides high-quality geared mountain bikes at the entrance. However, they only have about 10-15 cycles. Pro Tip: Reach the gate exactly at 10:00 AM on weekends, or the cycles will be sold out.
- Riding Your Own Bike: If you are a serious cyclist, you can bring your own MTB. The permit fee for bringing an external cycle is just ₹50.
Wildlife & Flora: What Will You See?
Because the forest is untouched by commercial logging or vehicular traffic, it is incredibly dense. Sunlight barely reaches the forest floor in some sections.
Fauna (Animals)
The sanctuary is home to the elusive Leopard, Barking Deer (Kakar), Goral, Yellow-throated Marten, and the Flying Squirrel. While spotting a leopard is extremely rare (they are nocturnal), you will frequently spot Barking Deer crossing the cycling trail.
Avifauna (Birds)
A paradise for bird watchers. Keep your eyes peeled for the Koklass Pheasant, Himalayan Monal (State Bird), Grosbeaks, and various species of woodpeckers. Bring a good pair of binoculars.
How to Reach the Sanctuary Gate
Navigation to the gate is where most tourists get confused, as it is located on the highway curve right before Dhalli.
- By Local Bus: Go to the Lakkar Bazaar bus stand in Shimla. Take any bus going towards Dhalli, Kufri, or Mashobra. Ask the conductor to drop you at the "Water Catchment Sanctuary Gate" or "Charabra / Hasan Valley Point". The gate is right on the highway (NH-5). Fare: ₹15.
- By Taxi: A one-way drop from Shimla Mall Road (Lift) to the sanctuary gate will cost around ₹400-₹500.
- Parking: If you drive your own car, there is a small parking space right outside the forest department barrier. You cannot take your car beyond this barrier.
Crucial Rules & Insider Tips
- Strict Silence: This is a wildlife reserve, not a picnic spot. Playing loud music on Bluetooth speakers is strictly prohibited and will get you evicted.
- No Plastic / Food: There are no cafes or shops inside the 14km trail. You must carry your own water bottle. Avoid carrying plastic wrappers. If you pack a light sandwich, ensure you bring all wrappers back out with you.
- The Leeches (Monsoon Warning): If you visit between July and September, the forest floor is infested with leeches. Stay strictly on the main dirt road. Do not walk into the tall grass. Wear full trousers and high socks.
- Walking/Trekking Option: If you don't want to cycle, you are completely free to just walk. Walking the 14 km round trip takes about 3.5 to 4 hours. It is one of the most therapeutic walks in Himachal Pradesh.
The Shimla Water Catchment Sanctuary is the ultimate antidote to the commercial noise of Mall Road and Kufri. Whether you are a hardcore cyclist or just a couple looking for absolute peace in nature, this 14km trail is a memory that will stay with you long after you leave the Himalayas.
