- Boundary Limit: Trekkers must not pedal beyond the orange safety buoys near the southern swamp zone where aquatic weeds can tangle paddle propellers.
Renuka Ji Zoo & Lion Safari: Timings, Wildlife & Tickets
Adjacent to the sacred lake lies the Renuka Wildlife Sanctuary & Mini Zoo, established in 1957. It holds the unique distinction of housing Himachal Pradesh's first open-moated Asiatic Lion Safari.
🦁 Open Lion Safari
Spread across a fenced forested ridge, visitors are driven inside a protected safari vehicle to observe Asiatic Lions roaming in semi-natural scrubland. Note: Safari vehicle runs depend on forest department vehicle availability and lion visibility schedules.
🐾 Key Wildlife Enclosures
The sanctuary provides spacious natural enclosures for Himalayan Black Bears, Spotted Deer (Chital), Barking Deer (Kakkar), Sambhar, Nilgai, and a dedicated Leopard rehabilitation zone.
🦜 Aviary & Migratory Birds
In winter (Nov–Feb), the lake becomes an international wintering habitat for migratory waterfowl including Mallards, Pochards, Coots, Cormorants, and the red-wattled lapwing.

The Sleeping Woman Contour: Mythological Origin & Geometry
When photographed from an aerial drone or viewed from the observation cliffs of Jamu Peak across the valley, the shoreline of Renuka Lake remarkably outlines the graceful profile of a reclining, sleeping woman. This natural phenomenon is tied directly to ancient Puranic legend:
The Legend of Goddess Renuka & Parshuram
According to local folklore, Goddess Renuka was the devout wife of the great sage Jamadagni Rishi and the mother of Lord Parshuram (the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu). The greedy Kshatriya king Sahasrarjuna attacked their ashram to steal the celestial wish-fulfilling cow, Kamadhenu. Jamadagni was slain during the battle.
To save her chastity and protect her family from the tyrant's army, Goddess Renuka jumped into a small natural basin (Ram Sarovar). Miraculously, the waters expanded outward into a serene, crescent-shaped lake embodying her divine reclining silhouette. Today, right alongside the mother lake lies the smaller, circular Parshuram Tal, symbolizing the eternal bond between mother and son.
Monsoon Advisory: Rising Water Levels (July to August)
Monsoon turns the surrounding Shivalik forests intensely green, but it introduces major logistical disruptions that tourists must be prepared for:
- Boating Suspensions: Heavy downpours lead to sudden surges in lake water levels. The HPTDC boat jetty frequently gets inundated, resulting in immediate suspension of all pedal and row boat operations for safety.
- Submerged Parikrama Path: The famous 3.2 km shaded walking loop around the lake has low-lying sections that become completely waterlogged or impassable due to loose rockslides from the hill slopes above.
- Road Landslides: The 38 km winding ghat road connecting Nahan to Dadahu/Renuka can experience localized mudslides and roadblocks during continuous torrential rains. Always check live road advisories before traveling.
The 3.2 km Parikrama Walkway & Sacred Fish Feeding
One of the most peaceful experiences in Himachal is doing the Renuka Lake Parikrama — a 3.2 kilometer paved, shaded pathway circling the entire periphery under dense banyan, peepal, and sal trees.
🐟 Feeding the Golden Mahseer
Thousands of giant Golden Mahseer and common carp inhabit the lake. At the temple ghats, pilgrims purchase puffed rice (kheel) and flour pellets to feed the fish. When you scatter food, hundreds of large fish rise to the surface in a spectacular splash. Strict fishing prohibition applies across the lake.
🚶 Parikrama Walk Time & Tips
Walking the full loop takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours at an easy stroll. It is completely flat with benches placed at scenic viewpoints. Early morning walks (6:30 AM to 8:00 AM) are paradise for birdwatchers, with kingfishers, egrets, and barking deer frequently spotted near the water's edge.
The Annual International Renuka Ji Fair (Kartik Purnima)
Held every year in October or November on the auspicious occasion of Dev Uthani Ekadashi and Kartik Purnima, the Renuka Ji Fair is one of Himachal's premier cultural spectacles.
- The Divine Reunion: The fair celebrates the sacred homecoming of Lord Parshuram from his high mountain abode to meet his mother Goddess Renuka. Silver palanquins (rathas) bearing deities from hundreds of Sirmauri and Jaunsari villages arrive accompanied by trumpet (narsingha) and drum processions.
- Maha Snan (Sacred Holy Dip): Hundreds of thousands of devotees take a holy purification dip in the cold lake waters at dawn on Kartik Purnima day.
- Local Fair Stalls: The carnival grounds at Dadahu feature vibrant markets selling traditional Sirmauri shawls, walnuts, dried ginger, Pahadi brass utensils, and authentic street snacks.
Where to Stay: HPTDC Hotel The Renuka & Dadahu Homestays
Accommodation options around the lake are focused on serene, eco-conscious stays:
